The Psychiatrist III, provides psychiatric evaluations, care and treatment to the patients at North Texas State Hospital. The Staff Psychiatrist is the clinical leader of a Treatment Team, providing guidance to other treatment team members regarding the treatment of the patients under their care. Completion of duties requires complex decision making within the guidelines laid out in the data sources referenced herein. The Staff Psychiatrist functions under the sole supervision of the Chief Psychiatrist on their program. The Staff Psychiatrist has an employment and medical staff appointment, completed an approved psychiatry residency program, a current, unrestricted license to practice medicine in Texas, and meets all other criteria as appropriate. The Staff Psychiatrist has thorough knowledge of medicine, general psychiatry and must be familiar with the appropriate psychopharmacology, behavioral management, limit setting and boundaries. The Staff Psychiatrist has the ability to evaluate patients and set up and carry out an effective course of treatment. The Staff Psychiatrist has skills in coordination of interdisciplinary team efforts in development, implementation and documentation of individualized care and treatment plans. Essential Job Functions:
1. Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule, in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. The Staff Psychiatrist may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime, based on the needs of the hospital. 2. Assessment (Psychiatric Evaluation/Scales/Physical Examination) (40%) a. Evaluates patients presenting for admission to determine if the Mental Health Code criteria is met; b. Performs comprehensive psychiatric assessment (history and mental status examination) in order to arrive at the most appropriate diagnostic impressions and formulations; c. When indicated, performs physical examinations and orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic studies; d. Monitors the patients response to treatment on a continuous basis; and e. Documents all patient encounters related to assessment, rationale for treatment interventions and other related issues in order to outline the course of hospitalization in EMR. Frequency of documentation is appropriate to level of care patient requires. 3. Treatment (medications, responsiveness, disposition) (35%) a. Adheres to departmental guidelines pertaining to the prescribing of psychotropic medications; b. Provides treatment in accordance with current acceptable practices; c. Evaluates the results of laboratory and other diagnostic studies and uses this information in the formulation of the treatment plan; d. Provides referral services to the appropriate venue for treatment of patients if the care indicated is not within the scope of the individual practitioner or the resources of this hospital; e. Disposition - Continuity of Care; Insures that discharge plans are timely and include provisions for after care and recommendations for further treatment. 4. Team Work (treatment team, responsiveness, referrals) (10%) a. Responds promptly to all calls; b. Actively participates in the treatment team process; c. Actively requests input from colleagues when indicated; and d. Demonstrates a cooperative and supportive manner in working with supervisor, unit governance, staff, patients, families and the general public in order to facilitate work and information flow. 5. Quality Improvement (5%) a. Participates in Performance Improvement initiatives; b. Attends Medical Staff Committee Meetings; c. When indicated, provides Plans of Correction for deficiencies identified by auditing committees/teams. 6. Customer Satisfaction (Patient and Family Relations) (5%) a. Practices in a manner that reflects esteem and respect for the patient and family members; b. Attentive to the needs of other co-workers and their ability to work toward a common goal for the patient; and c. Attentive to Community Mental Health Authorities and general public in their respective needs. 7. Responds to hospital wide professional needs in providing consultation, off unit coverage and MOD duties to assure medical / psychiatric needs of the patients are met. (5%) Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to supervise Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners and will be required to register with the TMB those PMHNPs who are under his/her supervision actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery of Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. Knowledge Skills Abilities:
1. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and treatment appropriate to the population specific needs of patients served. 2. Thorough knowledge of medicine, psychotherapy, psychopharmacology and supportive family and group therapy. 3. Thorough understanding of the current standard Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. 4. Advanced knowledge of the development, implementation and documentation of individualized care and treatment plans. 5. Ability to evaluate the population specific needs of patients and implement an effective course, in coordination with other disciplines. 6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and subordinate personnel; to deal with the public; and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 7. Physical ability to perform limited contact TIPS and CPR. Registration or Licensure Requirements:
1. Must be licensed to practice medicine by the State of Texas. 2. Must have a current, unrestricted DEA permit. Initial Selection Criteria:
1. Must be licensed as a Psychiatrist by the State of Texas. 2. Must have completed a 4-year ACGME accredited psychiatry residency training program.
Salary Range:
$200K -- $500K+
Minimum Qualification
